Sausage Gravy and Biscuits Recipe

A Southern classic that’s sure to become a favorite at your breakfast or brunch table. Rich and comforting, this dish combines tender biscuits with creamy sausage gravy for a hearty, satisfying meal.

Ingredients

For the Biscuits:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup cold butter, cubed
  • 3/4 cup milk (add more if needed)

For the Sausage Gravy:

  • 1 lb ground breakfast sausage
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/2 cups milk
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • Optional: Crushed red pepper flakes for a little heat

Instructions

1. Make the Biscuits:

  1. Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, mix together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Add the cold cubed butter and, using a pastry cutter or fork, cut it into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Gradually add the milk, stirring until the dough just comes together (it should be slightly sticky).
  5. Turn the dough onto a floured surface, gently pat it into a 1/2-inch thick rectangle, and cut out biscuits with a biscuit cutter or the rim of a glass.
  6. Place the biscuits on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 10-12 minutes, or until golden brown.

2. Prepare the Sausage Gravy:

  1. While the biscuits are baking, cook the sausage in a large skillet over medium heat until browned and crumbled. Do not drain the fat.
  2. Sprinkle the flour over the cooked sausage and stir to combine, cooking for about 1 minute to allow the flour to absorb the fat.
  3. Gradually whisk in the milk, scraping up any browned bits from the skillet. Continue cooking and stirring until the gravy thickens, about 5-8 minutes.
  4. Season the gravy with salt, black pepper, and crushed red pepper flakes if desired.

3. Serve:

  1. Split the warm biscuits in half and spoon the sausage gravy generously over each half.
  2. Serve immediately and enjoy this comforting dish!

This hearty meal is perfect for a cozy breakfast or brunch with family and friends!
